Fall Possibility Pile (Cue the Dramatic Music)

Posted September 22, 2020 by Sammie in #amreading, book list, TBR, top ten tuesdays / 27 Comments

I’d ask you all how your 2020 TBRs are going, but this year has been … *whistles* … and I fear that question might be more aggressive than I intended to start this post.

Let’s just assume, shall we, that we’re all more or less in similar boats. You know, one that is just big enough for ourselves. Slightly rusted out, to the point where the bottom may or may not fall out at any minute. The oars have drifted away … somewhere. Who knows if you’ll ever see them again. There’s something in the water circling beneath you, and it’s probably just sharks, but who’s to say it’s not, like, murder mermaids or the kraken or something?

You know … THAT boat.

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday is books on my fall 2020 TBR. Since we all know how bad I am at sticking to TBRs, I’m going with the tried and true possibility pile, which is just a ton of books that I might eventually get to. Maybe.

It’s less stress, and who needs more stress in their life right now? At this point, though, I think you can just assume it’s all the books and I will die a miserable old lady, amid a stack of books I haven’t quite gotten to yet, probably on the Internet ordering even more books because I just can’t help myself.

I had the best of intentions for spring and summer, I swear, as far as my TBR was concerned, but … yikes.

Let’s just say that it did not go how I expected. So will I actually read any of these upcoming ARCs? Probably. Will I read as many as I should? Probably not. My life is a bit of a dumpster fire right now, and it’s hard to steer a boat that’s on fire, okay?

For now, I’m just going to focus on ARCs. You know, like my reading life in general should be. Because hopefully, in theory, those are the books I should start the reading thing with. So let’s get on with it!

Also. I don’t know why. But I spent this entire post listening to Ghostbusters (I’m Not Afraid) by Fall Out Boy and Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr. on loop. Why? I don’t know. But if ever a blog post has a theme song, those two are it for this one. So, you know, if you want the FULL effect, go ahead and crank those up while you read.

October ARCs

The Head of Mimir     Tristan Strong Destroys the World     The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue     The Archive of the Forgotten     Over the Woodward Wall

The Head of Mimir: A novel set in the Legends of Asgard world about Heimdall before he was keeper of the Bifrost. Heimdall is one of my favorite characters, so the geek in me is super excited about this one.

Tristan Strong Destroys the World: Let’s be honest. Everyone knew this would be here, right? We’re back with Tristan and Gum Baby and Anansi (because of course I love Anansi). I can’t wait for this one, and I’m looking forward to who the new characters will be!

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: V.E. Schwab. Enough said, right? I love the idea of this Faustian bargain and the one man who’s able to remember her. Definitely has me curious already!

The Archive of the Forgotten: I’m so ready to revisit Hell’s Library, please and thanks. This mystery seems even cooler than the first one, and I’m super curious what effects the first book will have on everything. I confess that I’m super excited to join this cast again, especially Hero and Rami.

Over the Woodward Wall: Seanan McGuire with yet another pseudonym, which I am all for because it means she’s branching out her work! I love her writing style and I’m curious to see how she’ll tackle middle grade. I also can’t wait to see how Avery and Zib interact. It looks like it’s gonna be a good one!

Black Sun     Ring Shout     The Tinderbox: Soldier of Indira     Northern Wrath     Plain Bad Heroines

Black Sun: Inspired by pre-Columbian Americas. I’m not sure exactly what this is going to be about, but I am for sure up for this!

Ring Shout: I’m so interested in this alternate history story with magic. Seems like it combines the positive things about the South while not shying away from the negative ones.

The Tinderbox: Soldier of Indira: I remember watching Lou Diamond Phillips with my grandmother when I was little … and older, because gosh she loved Longmire. So when I saw he wrote a book, I was instantly intrigued! Plus, it just sounds really good.

Northern Wraith: The end of the gods? Color me intrigued. It’s been a while since I’ve read something based on Norse mythology, and I’m feeling like I need to get back into it.

Plain Bad Heroines: This sounds like it’ll be a fabulous fall read! Mysterious death and horror and all sorts of goodness.

November ARCs

The Camelot Betrayal     Cast in Firelight     The Boy, the Wolf, and the Stars     The Way Back

The Camelot Betrayal: Yeees to this sequel! Also that cover. I love King Arthur retellings, and Kiersten White’s writing is fabulous.

Cast in Firelight: I’m getting solid enemies-to-lovers vibes from this, and I am aaaall for that! Plus, the cover is gorgeous. And I’m all for the vibes of betrayal and attempted murder haha.

The Boy, the Wolf, and the Stars: This just sounds like a really fun, whimsical, but slightly dark book, and I can’t wait to pick it up! I love the fantasy tale/lore feeling in this book so far. I know I’ve mentioned covers a lot so far in this post, but … this cover gives me life, okay?

The Way Back: Based on Jewish folklore and filled with demons and danger! So much yes in this. I’m so freaking excited to read this one! Definitely one of my most anticipated books on this list.

December ARCs

A Wolf For A Spell     The Beast and the Bethany     Escaping Ordinary

A Wolf For A Spell: Two words: Baba. Yaga. I will forever show up for books with Baba Yaga. This also involves a wolf. I’m not sure what it is about wolves in MG, but I am aaaall for this!

The Beast and the Bethany: I’ve heard such good things about this one through The Write Reads blog tour, so I’m excited to pick it up for myself! I’m definitely getting Roald Dahl vibes just from the cover, and since it’s comped to him, I’m super curious.

Escaping Ordinary: I read the first book not too long ago, and it was super cute! I love the idea of a world where book characters are literally real and alive and training for their books and their placement. Plus, turning Ordinary into a video game? Definitely curious to see what that’s about!

  1. Kelsey

I keep seeing The Invisible Life of Addie Larue popping up on people’s lists and I feel like I may also need to check that out sometime!

    • You should definitely give it a go! I haven’t read it yet, but I’ve loved Schwab’s other work and am confident in her ability to tell a darn good story. 😉

    • I diiiid. The review’s probably going to be a little late, but I want to pick it up when I finish Tristan Strong. Gotta read that one first, man. I’ve been dying to read it since the minute I put down the first one. xD

  2. Wait, you got oars with your boat? Me they just told to paddle! xD

No, seriously, I’m not doing to well with my tbr. I mean, it’s not that I’m not reading, that is going rather well at the moment. It’s just that I keep piling piles on top of the other piles and am worried about the structur of our flat. You know? I don’t wanna crash through the neighbours’ ceiling and discover that the landlord is wearing thongs or something.

It’s not a surprise anymore that I don’t know most of the books listed but of course Tristan is on there. I’m still patiently waiting that they are picking it for bookclub but my patience is wearing thin.
Is it weird that I don’t like people comparing books to Roald Dahl’s books? I mean, I’ve read Bethany and I know what they mean but my brain is still going – how dare you standing where he stood?! You know?

    • I diiiid. You didn’t?! Man, you got cheated. You should … file a complaint or something.

I feel like as well as my reading is going, my ability to acquire books at this point is outpacing it, and i should probably … knock that off or something. So I completely hear you. Also hope you don’t fall through the ceiling. That sounds kinda messy and a hassle. Also potentially scarring for life haha.

That totally makes sense! I don’t really have any strong connection or affinity for Roald Dahl. I never loved his books, but they were entertaining, so it doesn’t bother me any way. But I’d feel the same of everyone was willy-nilly comparing things to my favorite books. 😛

    • To be honest, I got the idea of a possibility pile from Dini @ DiniPandaReads, so I can’t claim it for myself. Obviously, you’re not alone in the whole “can’t stick to TBRs” thing. xD

    • Thank you! If purchasing more books equated to reading more books, I’d be killing this autumn reading! But it doesn’t … does it? Nah. Probably, it’s just making my boat sink faster, I suppose. xD

  3. Sammie, I am incredibly envious of all your ARCs. I mean, I shouldn’t be because I’m terrible at reading ARCs outside of blog tour reads (WELP) but I want to get my hands on ALL OF THESE ASAP PLZ! Addie LaRue, Tristan Strong (GUM BABY!!!), Black Sun… Plz can has?! 😂 I hope you enjoy all of these! Can’t wait to hear what you think of them 😊

    • You shouldn’t be. I’m drowning in ARCs, and because I’m a horrible person, I’m terribly behind on actually, like, reading and reviewing them all? So yeah. Not good. YOU DEFINITELY NEED TO READ TRISTAN STRONG. I finished it this week and OMG. Yes. Just yes.

  4. I’m looking forward to reading Over the Woodward Wall! Middlegame was one of my favorite books last year, so I’m excited to see what this book-within-a-book is like.

Also, I’m a bit scared of Ring Shout. I love Clark’s writing, so I want to read more of it, but I’m not sure I’d enjoy that one. I’ve heard there’s lots of horror elements, and so I’m scared to try it. :-/

    • I’ve rarely read a Seanan McGuire book I didn’t fall in love with, so I’m really curious about that, of course.

I actually haven’t read any of Clark’s writing yet! Despite purchasing a few things years ago. Oops. So this’ll be my first!
