It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

“They’re coming!”

The little boy runs down the cobbled lanes of the small town at the edge of the harbour. He keeps brushing his wet blond hair from his eyes but it’s far too long and keeps getting in the way.

He’s never run this fast before.

He never used to have to, in the olden days.

I can see him pumping his hands in the air, and he looks over to me and smiles. I wonder if I can get out in time.

‘Let me hear you scream!’ he roars through the microphone.

And the entire bar goes wild.

Dammit.

✿ Lots of humor and sarcasm!
✿ Urban fantasy mixed with some subtle horror.
✿ A book revolving around bars and barkeeps!
✿ A bit of coming of age for an older protagonist.
✿ Reluctant hero & unprobable odds.

This is a weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: friendship.

I’m going to confess that the friendships in the books I read are sometimes strained. Sometimes enemies-to-friends (which is one of my favorite). I don’t think I read anything that doesn’t have some sort of friendship in it, though, honestly? Seems like that’d be a pretty boring book!

Escaping Ordinary     Gods of Jade and Shadow     Spellslinger     Spellbreaker     The Boy Who Steals Houses

I actually read Saving Fable earlier this year, and thought it was a really fun, unique read! So I’m really looking forward to Escaping Ordinary, which is book two. Not only is there friendships in this book, there’s found family! Plus, the whole world is based on characters from novels learning how to be proper characters in the hopes of finding a place in a novel of their very own.

I actually have absolutely no idea if there’s friendship in Gods of Jade and Shadow, but I’m assuming there is! Given that the blurb contains the phrase “In the company of the strangely alluring god,” I’m assuming there’s at least friendship, if not something more. Definitely curious about this one, though!

I’m fairly certain that Spellslinger has appeared on one of these lists before, and I still haven’t read it, because I’m … broken? Silly? I don’t even know, guys! I’ve heard so many wonderful things about it, and I’m super eager to actually give it a try! So I’m not sure what the holdup is.

I’ll actually be reading Spellbreaker soon, and I’m pretty darn excited about it. I read my first Holmberg book this year and loved it, so I absolutely jumped on this blog tour! There’s definitely at least romance in this, and I assume one must be friends in order to be lovers? Even in enemies-to-lovers, I’m pretty sure there’s a step of friendship in there somewhere.

Really, this is mostly a reminder to myself that I still need to read The Boy Who Steals Houses. I absolutely love Cait’s writing, but 2020 hasn’t really felt like the year to have my heart ripped out and stomped on, so I keep putting this one off.
