It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
Would you read a secret book you found in a secret room?
What if it might help you find your missing grandfather?
Would you believe what’s written in it?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

The Ice Dragon     The Axe & Grindstone     Frozen 2: Dangerous Secrets: The Story of Iduna and Agnarr

The Ice Dragon by George R.R. Martin
★★★☆ || Goodreads
This … isn’t quite what I expected when I picked up a George R.R. Martin book? To be fair, I totally bought it because of the giant dragon on the cover and the gorgeous illustrations inside. More than worth it! The story was surprisingly sweet, with an ending that is a weird combination of happy and sad. My feels are so confused. But in a good way, I suppose? I did enjoy the story, but I also felt that it was a tad rushed and not fully developed. There were definitely things that I think would’ve made the story stronger if they had been fleshed out just a bit more.

The Axe & Grindstone by Paul Phipps-Williams
★★★☆ || Goodreads

This was a super cute book, focused around bars as the center of a community. It just so happens to be a magical community. I thought this was such a neat idea! There’s a reluctant hero, which is the most fun of all, especially because yes, I can definitely relate to him not wanting to do all the potentially deadly stuff. The horror was fun and creepy, but also not too scary, and the humor was a nice counterbalance for it. There were times towards the end, though, when the pacing felt really off, and I wanted a better feel for the second world. Overall, though, I had fun with this book!

Frozen 2: Dangerous Secrets: The Story of Iduna and Agnarr by Mari Mancusi (review will be posted 11/12)
★★★★☆ || Goodreads
MY FEEEEELS, GUYS. Ugh. This hit me in aaaall the feels. Repeatedly. I actually just finished last night, so I’m still trying to figure out my thoughts. The focus here is really on the friends-to-lovers will they/won’t they romance between Iduna and Agnarr. The will they/won’t they didn’t do it for me because … well, you know they do. Obviously. You’ve seen the movies. Don’t pretend you haven’t. So I hated that angsty part of it, because we already know the ending, so that feels like false tension. The friends-to-lovers, though, is soooo sweet! I also loved the little Easter eggs from the movies that are thrown in here and there. The ending, though, felt a little rushed, with lots of time skips once they’re married, which felt a little choppy, but it packed a bunch of feels in all at the same time!

The Book of Kindly Deaths

The Book of Kindly Deaths by Eldritch Black
Status: 89/265 pages

When Eliza finds a mysterious, magical book in a secret room in her grandfather’s house, she reads the haunting stories found inside, but her world is turned upside-down when characters from the book start coming to life.

So far, this is a book within a book, which is interesting. I’m still not quite sure how I feel about this, except that the stories in the book inside the book are chilling and I love them. Basically, the main character has found this mysterious book in her grandfather’s house, and she hopes it’ll have a clue about why he disappeared. But in this book are stories about monsters and creatures and creepy things, written as if they’re true. But that’s not possible … right?!

There’s a definite creepiness about this book that doesn’t really cross over into scary horror. It makes a nice atmosphere, though, and I’m really enjoying the stories so far!

    The Mutant Mushroom Takeover     Sherlock Holmes and The Beast of the Stapletons

I don’t know what I want to read next, guys. I have some books to finish still that I started and just set aside, so I have no idea what I’m going to pick up next, honestly.

I think I’m going to pick up The Mutant Mushroom Takeover next. I was really hoping to read it together with Minion, but she’s not feeling it right now (she’s in a phase of books with dog protagonists), so I don’t want to push it. So I’ll probably just pick it up and set it on her shelf for whenever her mood changes again.

The publisher was also nice enough to send be Sherlock Holmes and The Beast of the Stapletons, so I’ll be picking that up, too! Really looking forward to that one. It’s been a while since I read a good Sherlock spin-off book, and it’s about time I pick one up!

    • This one actually isn’t. It’s just a novella (was a little over 100 pages), which is actually part of the reason I picked it up. I’m not really a fan of his series A Song of Ice and Fire, but I might check out some of his other stuff now, after reading this one. 🙂

    • The Axe and Grindstone was definitely a fun read! Still a little dark, like most of what I read, but with humor mixed in, so it was a bit of a palette cleanser from the whole “everyone dies and the world sucks” books I’ve been reading lately. xD

    • I really didn’t like A Song of Ice and Fire, but The Ice Dragon is definitely a different beast altogether (and shorter, too). I’d recommend it!

    • I’m gonna be completely honest … I *read* the original stories and barely remember anything about them. Most spin-offs do a pretty good job of summing up the original or building enough of a world around it so that you don’t need to actually have read them. xD

  1. Hehe how cute! I was tempted to pick up Iduna and Agnarr’s story because why not and it sounded really sweet, but like you said, we already know what happens! Glad it managed to hit you in the feels though 😉 Haha your current read sounds really interesting but also creepy AF and probs one I wouldn’t read coz of how creepy it sounds LOL but it also reminds me of that Uriah Heep book coz of the premise? I think. I just remember reading your review and wanting to read that book ASAP lol hope you enjoy it though! Happy reading, Sammie 🙂
