First Line Friday 56 || One Last Hurrah

It’s time to play “guess that book” and also watch our TBRs weep.

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader and is all about the first line of a current/upcoming read. Friday 56 is a meme hosted by Freda’s Voice, where you turn to page 56 (or 56%) in what you’re reading a find a snippet that jumps out at you.

Thirteen years ago . . .

The matriarch of House Kore adjusted the Christmas present in her arms. It was a portable little theatre, full of brightly painted figurines and miniature objects—swords and capes, whirring carousels, and even a rich velvet curtain controlled by a small drawstring mechanism. Severin would love it.

Three weeks before Winter Conclave . . .

Severin Montagnet-Alarie looked out over what had once been the Seven Sins Garden. Rare, coveted blossoms once coated the grounds—milk-petaled aureum and chartreuse golden moss, skeleton hyacinths and night-blooming cereus. And yet, it was the roses that his brother, Tristan, loved most.

“Bravery is physically exhausting,” he managed.

“You’re awake!” cried Laila, hugging him.

“You’re alive.”

“And your hair remains exceptional,” said Ruslan kindly.

C’est vrai” said a warm voice.

The Silvered Serpents

They are each other’s fiercest love, greatest danger, and only hope.

Séverin and his team members might have successfully thwarted the Fallen House, but victory came at a terrible cost — one that still haunts all of them. Desperate to make amends, Séverin pursues a dangerous lead to find a long lost artifact rumored to grant its possessor the power of God.

Their hunt lures them far from Paris, and into the icy heart of Russia where crystalline ice animals stalk forgotten mansions, broken goddesses carry deadly secrets, and a string of unsolved murders makes the crew question whether an ancient myth is a myth after all.

As hidden secrets come to the light and the ghosts of the past catch up to them, the crew will discover new dimensions of themselves. But what they find out may lead them down paths they never imagined.

A tale of love and betrayal as the crew risks their lives for one last job.

✿ Higher stakes! More drama! All the feels!
✿ The squad vibes that are fraying at the edges!
✿ Heist tropes are always fun. Especially ones that take you to Russia.
✿ The banter between team members!
✿ The will they/won’t they, doomed-from-the-start romances.
✿ Such fun personalities from the characters.

This is a weekly meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook meant to take place on Mondays, but since Fridays tend to be my TBR-focused post, I’ve decided to combine them here. Next Monday’s prompt is: black cover.

I love these cover prompts, especially this one! Mostly because it seems like the majority of the books on my shelf have black covers! So this should be easy … right?!

Wolfsong     Broken Web     A Song of Wraiths and Ruin     The Ballad of Black Tom     The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

I actually started Wolfsong a while back, but I didn’t get very far and it lapsed and had to be returned to the library. So I’m hoping to be able to dig into this one again soon! No surprise, since it’s a T.J. Klune title, but I enjoyed what I read of it so far!

Look, it’s a sequel to Forest of Souls! And the second cover is every bit as fierce and gorgeous as the first. I’m really interested in Broken Web, from the title to where the first book left off and everything in between. And I still can’t get over how gorgeous that cover is!

Everyone’s been telling me how good A Song of Wraiths and Ruin is, so I’m a tad bit ashamed not to have read it yet. This one looks so good, though, and now that my library has a copy, I can’t wait to get a chance to pick it up!

I’ve been curious about The Ballad of Black Tom for quite some time now, but I only just was able to get a copy. So now that I have one, I should really … read it or something. That cover is so striking, though, and it grabs my attention every time!

Another one I was supposed to have read already, but I will get to it hopefully sooner rather than later! It seems like everyone’s enjoying The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, and I’m a fan of the author, so I can’t wait to dig into it!

  1. I was reading the blurbs thinking how good this sounded and how much I wanted to read it and then when the book is revealed–I have a copy on my shelf to read! Yay! I still need to read the first book in the series though.

And look at those TBR books! I have A Song of Wraiths and Ruin on my TBR too, having bought a copy recently. I am glad you have heard it is good. That’s good news for both of us! Schwab’s book is on my wish list. I need to give her books a try. I am not ready for Broken Web yet–I still need to read Forest of Souls. I hope I have it. If I don’t, it’s on my wish list, I’m sure! So many great sounding books!

I hope you have a great weekend, Sammie. Stay safe and well.
