It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What would you do if you became the smartest kid in the universe?
Would you use your powers for good?
Would you squander them?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

Spellbreaker

Spellbreaker by Charlie N. Holmberg
★★★☆ || Goodreads
After really enjoying The Will and the Wilds by Holmberg earlier this year, I jumped on the opportunity to read another book by her! Definitely wasn’t disappointed. I’m not sure what it is about her romances, but Holmberg has a way of making even me, who’s staunchly against adorable romances, fall in love with these pairings. They’re adorable. I think I’m melting. Send help.

I made some progress on Sherlock Holmes and the Beast of the Stapletons (pg 200/396), but not as much as I’d hoped. I’ve just come to the conclusion that this one is going to be a slow read and it’s going to take some time. It’s been a while since I’ve read Sherlock Holmes, and I guess I forgot how tiring it was to read that style of writing lol.

The Smartest Kid in the Universe

The Smartest Kid in the Universe by Chris Grabenstein
Status: 80%

12 year old Jake’s middle school is about to be shut down. Jake and his friends know their school’s worth saving-if they could only figure out how! When Jake spies a bowl of jellybeans at the hotel where his mom works, he eats them. But uh-oh-those weren’t just jellybeans, one of the scientists at his mom’s conference is in the process of developing the first ingestible information pills. And THAT’S what Jake ate.

Before long, Jake is the smartest kid in the universe. But the pills haven’t been tested yet. And when word gets out about this new genius, people want him. The government. The mega corporations. Not all of them are good people! Can Jake navigate all the ins and outs of his newfound geniusdom (not to mention the ins and outs of middle school!) AND use his smarts to figure out how to save his school? (Hint-it will take someone smart enough to decipher an almost forgotten pirate legend!) It turns out, sometimes even the smartest kid has a lot to learn!

This one’s a pretty quick read, something that’d be good for mid-middle grade readers. The characters are fun, and the situation is entertaining. I love how many little facts and nuggets of info are slipped in. I actually learned quite a bit so far while reading this! My only complaint so far is that the plot feels a bit light and inconsistent. It’s not super tied together and a little all over the place. Definitely something I see a younger reader enjoying more than myself.

Seven Devils

Seven Devils by Laura Lam
Status: 38%

This first book in a feminist space opera duology follows seven resistance fighters who will free the galaxy from the ruthless Tholosian Empire–or die trying.

When Eris faked her death, she thought she had left her old life as the heir to the galaxy’s most ruthless empire behind. But her recruitment by the Novantaen Resistance, an organization opposed to the empire’s voracious expansion, throws her right back into the fray.

Eris has been assigned a new mission: to infiltrate a spaceship ferrying deadly cargo and return the intelligence gathered to the Resistance. But her partner for the mission, mechanic and hotshot pilot Cloelia, bears an old grudge against Eris, making an already difficult infiltration even more complicated.

When they find the ship, they discover more than they bargained for: three fugitives with firsthand knowledge of the corrupt empire’s inner workings.

Together, these women possess the knowledge and capabilities to bring the empire to its knees. But the clock is ticking: the new heir to the empire plans to disrupt a peace summit with the only remaining alien empire, ensuring the empire’s continued expansion. If they can find a way to stop him, they will save the galaxy. If they can’t, millions may die.

Not gonna lie, this one had a slow beginning, and I panicked at first thinking I’ve heard so much good stuff about this book and I hate it already. Nooooo. But it’s okay! False alarm. The book takes a little while to warm up, but once it gets going, that’s it! It really takes off.

I’m loving the forced squad vibes in this. It’s one of my favorite tropes, when enemies are forced to work together and grudging come to a mutual understanding. *chef’s kiss* Of course, where I am right now, there’s absolutely no understanding achieved yet, which makes it all the more fun.

The plot so far is a little meh to me, which is absolutely fine, because I am 100% here for these characters! They’re all so different, and the dynamic between them is just perfection.

The Magical Unicorn Society Official Boxed Set     Peril in the Old Country

I received The Magical Unicorn Society Official Boxed Set as part of an upcoming tour, and Minion laid eyes on it as soon as I opened it and then promptly ran off with it, the little sneak. So we’ve agreed to read this one together, which I’m okay with because it gets her reading.

Then I need to pick up Peril in the Old Country for an upcoming blog tour on the third book. I read the beginning, and it sounds funny, so I’m looking forward to it! Can use a bit more funny reads in my life right now, I do believe.

After that … I have no idea. I’m going to wing this part of it, because I’ve still been kind of all over the place as far as reading goes, so we’ll see what I feel like picking up next!

  1. I like books with forced squads, too! (I mean, assuming it’s done well. That kinda goes without saying.) Plus the cover on Seven Devils is making me itch to try to figure out who is supposed to be who. (Not that I know the cast at all.) Good luck getting the unicorn book back! 😉

  2. LOL when I read the synopsis you shared for Seven Devils I was like ‘WAIT WHAT?!’ 😂 But it’s for The Smartest Kid in the Universe! Seven Devils sound so good (and I’m glad it’s not MG). Can’t wait to hear what you think of it in the end! Happy reading, Sammie 🙂
