What Are You Reading Wednesday (March 3, 2021)

Posted March 3, 2021 by Sammie in #amreading, chat with me, www wednesday / 11 Comments

It’s time again to ask ourselves the three W’s:
What if your father was willing to risk your life for his kingdom?
Would you still be faithful to him?
Would you fight for the new king instead?

Wait, no, that’s not right. We ask these three W’s:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
Which books will you read next?

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

The Crossroads at Midnight    Peter Lee's Notes From the Field    The Thirteenth Fairy

The Crossroads at Midnight by Abby Howard

★★★★ || Goodreads
I’m not usually one for short story collections, but I enjoyed Howards’ previous work. I enjoyed that the short stories in this were twisty and unexpected. The stories always start one way and take a surprising turn somewhere else. I really like Howard’s art style, too. If you’re into horror, this collection is for you!

Peter Lee’s Notes From the Field by Angela Ahn

★★★★ || Goodreads
For anyone who loves dinosaurs, this one is for you! I loved Peter’s passion when it comes to paleontology and also the way his passion is tested when he’s violently thrust into reality and learns what paleontology is actually like. There’s also a super sweet family bond subplot and a very emotionally subplot relating to dementia.

The Thirteenth Fairy by Melissa de la Cruz

★★★ || Goodreads
I think the target audience will enjoy this one more than I did. It’s from the author of the Descendants books. I can see my own daughter, who loves that show, liking this one. My adult brain didn’t love it as much. The first part was kind of slow and filled with things like unrealistic and unbelievable bullying, which I wasn’t a fan of. The last half or so was jam-packed with action, and I enjoyed that part the most. Unfortunately, there were also some small inconsistencies that I picked up on. Again, it bugged me, but likely the target audience wouldn’t notice. All told, I will for sure be encouraging the library to get a copy, because I think this will be a hit among middle grade readers!

I haven’t had a chance to make much progress in reading Midnight Riot due to blog tour reads, and I actually think I need to put it on pause. Someone else is waiting on hold for it, and I won’t have enough time to finish it, so I’ll come back when the person waiting is done.

I’m almost done reading Aurora Rising and absolutely loving it. I can’t decide whether I love Kal more or Fin or maybe I just love them all equally. The dynamics on this squad are *chef’s kiss*. Also, so many plot twists. I shouldn’t be surprised by now, given the authors, but dang, they got me good.

Knight's Ransom

Knight’s Ransom by Jeff Wheeler
Status: 50%

Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown. A brutal war of succession has plunged the court of Kingfountain into a power struggle between a charitable king who took the crown unlawfully and his ambitious rival, Devon Argentine. The balance of power between the two men hinges on the fate of a young boy ensnared in this courtly intrigue. A boy befittingly nicknamed Ransom.

When the Argentine family finally rules, Ransom must make his own way in the world. Opportunities open and shut before him as he journeys along the path to knighthood, blind to a shadowy conspiracy of jealousy and revenge. Securing his place will not be easy, nor will winning the affection of Lady Claire de Murrow, a fiery young heiress from an unpredictably mad kingdom.

Ransom interrupts an abduction plot targeting the Queen of Ceredigion and earns a position in service to her son, the firstborn of the new Argentine dynasty. But conflict and treachery threaten the family, and Ransom must also come to understand and hone his burgeoning powers—abilities that involve more than his mastery with a blade and that make him as much a target as his lord.

I am absolutely soaring through this book and loving it. Poor Ransom has had a tough life, but his determination and perseverance is something to be admired. I absolutely love Lady Claire, and she seems like a nice balance to Ransom’s more reserved politeness, given that she’s not in the least bit afraid to speak her mind.

So much has happened in the first half of this book that I honestly have absolutely no idea what to expect from the next half, but I’m excited to find out!

The Memory Thief    Ranger's Oath    They Called Us Enemy    Elatsoe

More blog reads incoming! I may have gone a little overboard in participating in blog tours this month, especially given the fact that grad school is ramping up. Oops? Ah well, I’ve got this! Probably.

This Friday, I’ll be reviewing The Memory Thief, which I’ll likely be picking up tonight as soon as I finish my current read. I’ve also got Ranger’s Oath coming up this weekend. It’s one that I read the beginning of for BBNYA last year, and I enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to the chance to read the rest of it.

Then I’ve got a couple of library reads I need to get to before my hold lapses. They Called Us Enemy should be a quick and powerful read. I also had my hold for Elatsoe came through, so I want to try to squeeze that in!

    • I should be starting the sequel at the end of this week! I can’t wait. I’m glad that I waited to read them together, because waiting for the next book is hard. xD I’m sort of dreading getting through the second one and realizing I need to wait for the third book lol.
