June OwlCrate Junior Unboxing || Minion’s First Book Box

Like most things on this blog, this post is a bit late, because of course Minion didn’t wait until now to open her June box.

Pffft, I can’t even get her to wait until we get home to eat a treat we got at the store, so rest assured, she tore into this box the moment it arrived. So it’s me. I’m the slow one.

Minion actually didn’t want a book box at first, honestly. When I told her we’d gotten her a subscription for all of summer, she originally groaned.

Which, you know, is always the response from your offspring when you shell out a ton of money to get them something. But then I showed her some of the past boxes, and she immediately began to pester me about when it would come in. So rest assured, the minute this pretty little box came in, she was aaaall over it.

June’s theme: Magic in Bloom

This was a super summery box, which we both enjoyed, especially since it’s been raining for eternity here. The Creativity Corner project inside this booklet was plantable seed paper, which was a very timely and adorable project, and paired perfectly with the flower seed packet that I got from my Beacon Box, so that was a really nice coincidence.

One of the first things Minion pulled out was the fluffy dandelion gel pen, which she immediately fell in love with. She has a thing for pens. I can’t imagine where she got that from. *whistles innocently* So she was super excited about getting that and immediately put it with her journals.

She also collects bookmarks, so while she doesn’t know much of anything about Harry Potter, she loved the Mandrake bookmark, which is a really pretty wood bookmark that’s super cute and, if I’m honest, will probably never get used because she’s afraid she’ll break it. Which is fair. At least she realizes it lol.

Minion only in the past year or so really started getting into Mario, so she actually recognized the character on the cinnamon Fire Flower tea, and she was pretty excited! We actually haven’t tried it yet because it’s been about 10 degrees cooler than the surface of the sun here, so we’re waiting for a cooler, stormy day, but it sounds delicious. Minion is hoping it’ll be a teensy bit “spicy,” since that’s her thing lately.

The terraforming Cherry Tree kit is super cute. It was probably the most exciting thing for Minion, because she’s going through a bit of a science phase and she really enjoys small projects like that.

This box came with two books, which I was surprised by. Neither of us have read either, and even though it’s not my box, you can bet I’m stealing these to read them.

The first is The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, which I know is a classic, but still. Never read it. This is a Penguin Classic cover, and I thought it was super cute and definitely more inviting to kids.

The primary book the box was built around is The Girl and the Witch’s Garden by Erin Bowman, which is a book I was actually curious about! Minion was a little indifferent about it, but to be fair, she’s not a huge reader. I asked if she wanted to read it and if it sounded good, and she said yes, and she also loves the cover, so we’ll see. I’m hoping throwing different books at her will help her find more books she enjoys. *crosses fingers*

July’s theme: Lost in a book

This theme sounds so freaking cute, and I’m probably looking forward to it more than Minion (though, make no mistake, after opening this, she is extremely excited for the next one and has already started asking every few days if it’s been shipped yet).

Next month’s book is about books “pulling you in and coming to life … for better or for worse!” But let’s be honest. Books coming to life is always for better. If some people perchance die in the process? It’s for the greater good. They’ll be remembered for their sacrifice.

The card says the book will be perfect for fans of Diana Wynne Jones, and that right there caught my attention. Minion has also watched and loved Howl’s Moving Castle, so I told her Jones was the author of the book the movie is based on, and now she’s super excited to see what will come this month, too!

    • They are! I was intending to get one for myself, but they were out. But I was able to get one for her instead, so I guess that’s good enough. xD

    • It did! I was so impressed with it. I’d seen the pictures of the other boxes, so I kind of figured she’d be happy with it, but I’m glad she liked it so much. Anything to really get her into reading a bit more, and she does seem more pumped about it recently.

  1. The Secret Garden is one of my favourite books of ever. I have so many memories liked to this book, I can’t even tell you. I love the tone of this book and the fact that it get through without actually having a villain. It always fascinated me beyond believe. And made me mad that the adaptations always made Mrs. Medlock into a bad person. She isn’t. (Also, all the Yorkshire accent. Love the Yorkshire accent.) My original handle had something to do with this book. Erm, maybe I should just stop gushing but still. I love this book. I hope you’ll like it.
I never ordered an Owlcrate although I would have taken an Owlcrate JR if the shipping wasn’t so much. I hope your little one (and you) has fun with the böx.

    • I’m so glad to hear that. <3 I love hearing you gush about it haha. Maybe I'll have to smuggle this one out of her room while she's not looking so I can check it out. 😉

The shipping just went up, too, which is kind of a pain. =/ I love book boxes, but they're so cost prohibitive, and I totally get why, but it's definitely not something we'll be doing regularly. We did it this summer to give her something to do/look forward to with everything that's going on.

    • Awww that sounds like a great thing to enjoy! Does he have his own little garden? We tried that for Minion, but she didn’t have that sort of patience (no surprise, since she’s mine haha). We try to keep science projects now smaller scope so they hold her attention. I hope you can find something similar to it, though! We’ve done crystal growing projects before, and she enjoys that sort of thing.
