August Recap || Finally A Spot of Good News

Posted August 30, 2020 by Sammie in monthly recap / 2 Comments

If you’ve been following my blog for a little while, you know July was a chaotic month for so many reasons, but August … well, I have no complaints about August?

Except maybe that it flew by and no one gave it permission to do that. I actually had a really good August, which is a win that I so desperately needed at this point.

So let’s get into a few things that happened in August.

  • My grandfather turned 89 years old. There was no cake, because he insisted he didn’t want any, which is a sham, I tell you. Birthdays require cake. If you don’t want cake … think of all the people attending! I guarantee they’re expecting cake! We cooked him dinner, and he seemed to have a good time, so that’s always a good thing.
  • I went into interview request mode, since author interviews was a thing I really wanted to happen more for this blog this year … so I’m super excited to say that I’ve got more interviews coming up! I have a lot of fun with author interviews (and I hope they do, too, with my questions?), and I’m so thankful to the authors who have taken time to answer my questions. Hopefully, you all enjoy reading them? Because there are at least three more coming up in the next two months, with authors that I think you’ll enjoy getting to know more about. I sure did.
  • The diverse book drive at my library starts NEXT WEEK, which means the Tour the World in 30 Books blog tour I’m hosting does, too. Click that handy link up there to learn more about the blog tour. Also keep an eye out on September 1 for my kickoff post and me introducing the book I’ve chosen to donate for the book drive! Hint: it’s middle grade, full of adventures, and based on Mexican mythology. I’ll be donating it in my assistant director’s memory. I can’t wait for this blog tour to get underway and to share all these wonderful books with you!
  • I applied to graduate school to get a master’s in library science! This has been a bit of a wild ride. It’s something I’ve been considering in the past year, because my assistant director always said she’d need an assistant director when she became the director. So it was a, yeah, okay, maybe in the distant future I’d consider going back. Well, life sort of … happened … and now the library needs a director AND an assistant director, and it’s lead to a lot of difficult decisions and choices. I’ve officially put in my resume for a position, but I’ve decided to go get my master’s regardless of whether I get it or not, because I can finally say for sure that I want to be a librarian for life. I’ve never really knew what I wanted to do when I grew up, so this feels a little like a revelation, even if it should be an obvious choice (me + books forever = duh).

So that was my month. And now let’s get on with the books!

Blogger Post Love

Here are some great posts this month from other bloggers:

Toya @ The Reading Chemist shares an honest dear white people letter from her white husband, plus some Black book recommendations.

Bri @ Books and Shadows shares five mistakes she made as a newbie book blogger.

Arina @ The Bookwyrm’s Guide to the Galaxy wrote a really comprehensive beginner’s guide to blog tours, which I can’t recommend enough if you’ve been considering trying blog tours for the first time (or if you’re new to it in general).

Andrew @ On My Bookshelf shared a really handy infographic on the new social media image sizes for 2020 (because they seem to change that mess every other day, don’t they?!).

Krysta & Briana @ Pages Unbound are on fire this month with posts supporting libraries, and because I’m not a all biased when it comes to this, I think you should check them all out. They talk about easy ways to support your local library through word-of-mouth marketing, plus 10 digital resources you can take advantage of from most public libraries, and then, to wrap it all up, they unpack five misconceptions people may have about public libraries.

✦ Over at the Witty and Sarcastic Bookclub, she shares some self-published fantasy book suggestions in preparation for September, which is Self-Published Fantasy Book Month.

Sim @ Flipping Through the Pages shares four tips for completing a reading challenge, for those who are like me and struggle with it!

QotD: What are some of your favorite diverse books? . I’m actually compiling a wishlist of diverse books for the library I work at. In September, we’ll be running a diverse book drive, because I feel it’s so important that people, but especially kids, in our small, homogeneous county deserve the ability to experience the wider world and learn about new perspectives and cultures. . These are the latest diverse books I’ve purchased, mostly from recommendations from other bloggers! A couple of them I intend to keep (sorry, but The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is signed and gorgeous and I will not part with it haha). But I did purchase some of these with the intent purpose of donating for the drive, and I’m looking forward to it! . If you want more information about the blog tour I’m setting up to shout about diverse books, check out my blog, The Bookwyrm’s Den, or DM me. If you’re interested in donating to the book drive, DM me to find out how! . #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #books #booklover #bookworm #booknerd #bookaholic #bookblogger #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #instabooks #igreads #booksbooksbooks #booksofig #bibliophile #bookish #bookishlife

QotD: What upcoming fall releases are you most looking forward to? . I’m really feeling the fall vibe myself, personally, which means SPOOKY READS. Fall is my favorite time of year, so it seems like a good time to scare myself silly. . One of the book clubs I’m in, Middle Grade Marvels, is reading SMALL SPACES for this month’s book, which I’ve already read, but boy has it gotten me in the mood for something spooky. I’m really looking forward to picking up WHISPERING PINES, which has a bit of a similar feel to it, set in a small town (which we all know is the *spookiest* place to be short of a haunted house), and with some devious eye-stealing going on, which has me all sorts of curious. . If you’re interested in other great fall MG reads I’m looking forward to, I’ve listed ten in my blog post today on The Bookwyrm’s Den (link in bio). . #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #books #booklover #bookworm #booknerd #bookaholic #bookblogger #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #instabooks #igreads #booksbooksbooks #booksofig #bibliophile #bookish #bookishlife #middlegrademarvels #whisperingpines #smallspaces

What would you do if you were fighting for justice in a world that would rather you were dead, against a queen that has made exactly that her mission? . I’m not sure what took me so long to start this duology, because it’s just dark enough for my shriveled, black heart to beat again in excitement. If you love dark fantasy, I can’t recommend this one enough. . Reasons you definitely need to pick up this duology: 🦅 Dark world that will make you thankful to live in this one. 🦅 Tough as nails female lead fighting the establishment with no apologies 🦅 A cat named Barf. Trust me, he’s a treasure. 🦅 Enemies-to-lovers romance, which eventually turns into “it’s complicated” 🦅 Magic based on class 🦅 A plague! Who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned plague? 🦅 This one only attacks the sinners who need to atone for what they’ve done, though. 🦅 Khoda. If you don’t read it for me, read it for Khoda. He’s worth it. . You can find my full review of THE FAITHLESS HAWK on my blog, The Bookwyrm’s Den (link in bio), plus enter a giveaway for the chance to win a copy yourself (US and Canada only). . #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #books #booklover #bookworm #booknerd #bookaholic #bookblogger #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #instabooks #igreads #booksbooksbooks #booksofig #bibliophile #bookish #bookishlife #bookreview #margaretowen #TBRBeyondTours #FaithlessHawk

What would you do if you fell into another world whose sun was dying, and their only chance of survival might just rely on your ability to unite them? . Well … I think we all know what *I* would do, which is laugh and wish them good luck, because they are totally and royally screwed, obviously. And then I’d go off exploring, like you do. . Luckily for Ohinyan, that is NOT what Fia does in THE ETERNAL DUSK, which is book two in the Daughter of the Phoenix series. . This book has a little of everything: ✩ Betrayal and backstabbing ✩ Magic (both dark and light) ✩ The kind that can heal, but also set things on fire. Because balance is important. ✩ The introduction of some pretty awesome new characters ✩ Like a fox, who is clearly just tolerating these silly humans and angels ✩ And Jo, who’s still a little confused about new worlds but kicking butt nonetheless ✩ A villain who enjoys watching the world burn, and probably for good reason. ✩ I mean, to be fair, his grievance is pretty dang legitimate. . You can find my full review of THE ETERNAL DUSK on my blog, The Bookwyrm’s Den (link in bio). . #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #books #booklover #bookworm #booknerd #bookaholic #bookblogger #readersofinstagram #booksofinstagram #instabooks #igreads #booksbooksbooks #booksofig #bibliophile #bookish #bookishlife #bookreview #theeternaldusk #victoriajprice
